Presentations on Rochester's History

Thank you for your interest in RARES PowerPoint presentations about Rochester's Churches, Rochester's History, and Real Estate and Downsizing issues for Seniors.  These are presentations developed specifically for community organizations, seniors, and church groups. They have been presented at numerous locations in Binghamton, Buffalo, and here in the Rochester area.

There are presently eleven (11) presentations in the series and others are constantly being developed (1 is presently in the works for completion by the end of 2007).   If you have heard me speak before, you may not be aware of a number of new presentations including one on the Erie Canal, two on Rochester's Parks, and three on Rochester's churches.  You may elect to have me present any one or combination of these sessions though I would suggest that the multi-part lectures be presented in a series so as not to disrupt the flow of information.

All presentations are approximately one  hour in length with a few being a bit longer.  The approximately delivery time for each is presented below.  I am pleased to offer one or all at your convenience to groups of any size.  These presentations have been delivered at the Penfield Community Center, the Perinton Community Center, the Greece Public Library, the Greece Historical Society, the Damascus Shriners, the Pittsford Senior Center, the East Rochester Seniors Center, the Irondequoit Seniors Center, the Greece Community Center, The Pittsford Public Library as well as to numerous other church-related and civic organizations.

Please note that a donation of $35 to the not-for-profit RARES - the Regional Area Recreation and Employee Services Association - is requested for all presentations to defray the costs of equipment except for those presentations geared toward Seniors' real estate needs (these presentations are noted below).  All I require to present a presentation is a blank wall or screen - laptop and projector are furnished by RARES.

ROCHESTER'S CHURCHES
Rochester's Churches:  Built Upon Faith (Part 1)
Organized religion took hold in Rochester before we were even called Rochester and before we were even known as Rochesterville - just little ol' Genesee Falls.  From the humble beginning when 16 members met in 1815 to form the First Presbyterian Church, this presentation traces the history of organized religion and the earliest churches in Rochester that are still in existence today and features St. Simon Cyrene & St. Luke's Church, St. Paul's Church, Third Presbyterian, and Sacred Heart Cathedral.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

Rochester's Churches:  Built Upon Faith (Part 2)
This presentation takes over where part 1 left off and focuses on some of the more "recent" churches built in Rochester with a special focus on some of the places of worship built by and servicing various ethnic communities in the Rochester area including St. Michael's, St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. Mary's and the First Church of Christ Scientist.    A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

Rochester's Churches:  Built Upon Faith (Part 3)
This presentation takes over where parts 1 and 2 left off and focuses on some of the other beautiful churches of Rochester including St. Peter & Paul's, Blessed Sacrament, United (or Brick) Presbyterian, St. Josaphat's Ukranian Catholic Church, First Universalit, First Unitarian, and the Reformation Lutheran church.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

Stained Glass - Our Ecclesiastical Heritage
Our ecclesiastical heritage is celebrated in the beautiful stained glass windows that we see throughout the churches in Rochester.  This presentation provides a background on stained glass - how it's manufactured and how it is repaired, with special emphasis on the beautiful windows, including many Tiffany windows and those of Rochester's own Pike Company.  Featured churches include:  St. Paul's, Third Presbyterian, St. Mary's, St. Michael's, St. Stanislaus  Kostka, etc.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

ROCHESTER'S HISTORY & GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS

The Third Ward:  Rochester's First Wealthy Neighborhood
Before East Avenue and "the country" became the fashionable place for Rochester's elite to be, that area of Rochester that we now know as Corn Hill was the place where the wealthy lived in Rochester.  This PowerPoint presentation traces the history of the area from its beginnings as the home of the wealthy merchant class in Rochester to today's Corn Hill.  There is a large focus on the architectural history and contributions of the area with a pictorial tour of some of the more architecturally interesting homes of today as well as some of those that were demolished years ago.  Approximately 80 minutes in length.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

The Mansions of East Avenue
This PowerPoint presentation talks leads the audience through a pictorial history of Rochester's wealthy East Avenue from the early 1800's to today.  Not only are some of the great mansions shown in their former glory as well as in their present restored condition but many of the great mansions lost in the mid-1900's are featured as well so that the audience can truly appreciate what it is that made East Avenue the place to be for more than 70 years in Rochester's history.  Approximately one hour in length.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

The Erie Canal:  America's First Superhighway

Popularized in writing and song, the original Erie Canal covered 363 miles of water highway, took 8 years to construct, required hundreds of thousands of man hours in construction, and 3,000 canal boats traveled the corridor from Albany to Buffalo upon completion.  This PowerPoint presentation traces the historical development of the Erie Canal - from politics to construction from the early 1800s to today.  The audience will learn about the trials and tribulations of building the canal, lock operation, and see dozens of photos of life on the Canal with a special focus on the Rochester area.  Approximately one hour in length.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

ROCHESTER'S PARKS
Rochester's Parks:  A Living Legacy (Part 1)
The recurring spectacle of a hillside of blooming lilacs is something to see and the audience will see this and more in this presentation on Rochester's parks.  This pictorial tour of the parks of the Rochester area begins with a history of the development of parks in the Rochester area from the early 1800s and chronologically examines the parks according to the year that each was established.  The audience will see early drawings and photos along with more modern photos to allow them a grasp of how our park system has evolved.  Parks included are Browns Square/Manhattan Square, Jones Square, Genesee Valley Park, Mount Hope Cemetery, Highland Park, and Cobbs Hill.  Approximately one hour in length.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

Rochester's Parks:  A Living Legacy (Part 2 - A Time for Amusement)

Rochester's parks have long been a playground for its residents and in this presentation, we trace the historical development of the amusement parks that have graced Rochester's shoreline from Ontario Beach Park, Dreamland, and Glen Haven Amusement Park to today's Seabreeze.  Approximately one hour in length.  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

Rochester's Parks:  A Living Legacy

There are so many beautiful parks in the Rochester and Monroe County Parks system that they couldn't all be covered in a single presentation.  This presentation picks up where Parts 1 and 2 left off and covers the historical development and evolution of the Parks system from the late 1800s on with a pictorial representation of:  Maplewood Park, Edgerton (Exposition) Park, Durand Eastman Park, Powder Mills Park, and Plymouth Park (parks included subject to revision).  A donation of $35 dollars to RARES is requested for this presentation.

SENIOR LIFE TRANSITION ISSUES
Downsizing - How to handle the transition from one home to another later in life
This session focuses on the issues facing seniors as they downsize later in life - from their home to an apartment, a relative's home, or a senior living facility.  It discusses steps and alternatives that they engage themselves in - from holding household sales and auctions, preparing for a move (contacting and comparing moving companies and prices), and how to dispose of unwanted items (either through consignment sale or donation).  Seniors are presented with lists of credible consignment shops, household sales and auction companies, as well as senior living facilities in the area.  All reputable organizations are represented with no intent to favor or push one over another.  This is a practical, hands-on session that leaves seniors with a great deal of usable information for helping them in the transition from one home to another or from their home to a senior living facility.  Approximately 70 minutes in length.  There is no charge for this presentation.

Life Transitions - Adventures in Real Estate for the Active Adult, Senior, or Retiree
This PowerPoint presentation begins with some interesting and to many startling facts and figures on the senior population of the U.S. and Rochester.  It addresses some of the concerns that seniors typically express in buying and selling real estate later in life.  It discusses issues in selling their house, buying their next home and presents a solid discussion of financing options specifically aimed at the senior market including both the pros and cons of reverse mortgages, tax deferred exchanges (1031 and Stark Exchanges) as well as legal issues that seniors need to be abreast of in planning for their estates such as increased benefit and contribution limits for qualified retirement plans and durable power of attorney for health care.

This presentation, upon request, can be delivered with the assistance of the Senior Transitions Advantaged Real Estate Team (START ©) which includes both legal and financial counsel or subsequent follow-up visits to address particular issues of interest to the audience such as 1031 Exchanges can be scheduled with counsel.  Approximately 75 minutes in length.  There is no charge for this presentation.

All presentations are on PowerPoint.  I furnish both a laptop and a projector for the presentation.  All you need to furnish is a room with a blank wall and/or a screen.  For larger presentations, a microphone and lectern may be in order.  With selected presentations, I furnish a handout with references and a bit of historical information as a "take home" for the audience.  I will provide a copy of this document in advance and ask that you make copies of it for distribution.

A bit about the presenter

Brian Mount is the Chief Executive Officer of RARES, the Regional Area Recreation and Employee Services Association.  RARES provides discounts on area products and services to western New York-based companies. RARES, through it's recreation outreach program, has graciously underwritten the development of these presentations.

The lectures on Downsizing and Adventures in Real Estate are provided at no charge.  Other lectures may have a fee associated with them to underwrite the cost of equipment rental.  As a not-for-profit itself, RARES underwrites the cost of these presentations for a selected # of presentations annually.  For most organizations, including recreation centers, senior centers and for-profit organizations, I generally ask for a $35 donation to RARES in return for the usage of their equipment.

In addition to my duties as CEO of RARES I am also a real estate specialist (Broker Associate with Magellan Realty in Fairport) with over 22 years of experience in helping seniors in the buying, selling, and management of real estate.  I am certified as a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) - a designation that fewer than 1% of all real estate agents have.  I teach statistics and marketing at area institutions including Medaille College.  I also have a background in public speaking with more than two dozen different presentations (not on real estate topics) delivered over the years to organizations as diverse as the U.S. Army, the State of Illinois, the National Association of College Admissions Counselors, the Middle States Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the American Marketing Association, etc.  My prior career, for more than 15 years, was in college admissions and financial aid.  Consequently, I relish the opportunity to speak before an audience as I have done so many times in the past.

I present these seminars to help put my name and that of RARES before the community in Rochester but I do not actively promote my services as a Realtor during these presentations.  I've been to too many seminars sponsored by others in my field that are thinly veiled attempts to cultivate new business with very little substance.  These are sessions of great historical substance and interesting photos.  I have found that if I present an interesting and informative session, the seniors will remember my name when it comes time for them to speak with a Realtor and that's my reward for a job well done.

If you're interested in any of these sessions, please do not hesitate to contact me to schedule a date for presentations.
